Frequently Asked Questions by Participants |
| What is Integrated Systems Technology? |
Integrated Systems Technology (IST) is a new, high-demand career opportunity
that involves cross-training in the
areas of electrical, mechanical, and electronic systems. American industries
are becoming much more dependent
upon the use of high-tech equipment that involves multiple, integrated systems.
It is critical that these companies be
able to recruit and employ individuals who know how to operate, troubleshoot,
and maintain this high-tech equipment. |
| |
| Is Integrated Systems Technology (IST) a growing field? |
The number of positions involving the operation and/or maintenance of
integrated systems is increasing as work
environments rely more heavily on high-tech equipment. Employers are searching
for and interested in hiring
individuals who understand and can operate or maintain integrated systems
that involve mechanical, electrical, and
electronic components. Current employees who have these skills are aging-out
and retiring, and there aren’t enough
newly trained individuals to fill these jobs. Even with a general decline
in the number of manufacturing jobs, positions
that require the knowledge of integrated systems are increasing. |
| |
What kind of wage can I expect to earn in this field?
|
| The wage you earn will depend upon variables such as geographic location
of your employer and your prior
experiences in related fields. Jobs that are currently available that require
training in integrated systems vary from a
low of $9.00 an hour, to a high of $24.00 an hour. The majority of positions
currently listed are in the $10.00 - $15.00
an hour range. It is important to remember, also, that many of these positions
involve the possibility of overtime,
which can pay from time-and-a-half to double-time for overtime hours worked.

| What will be required of me during my IST Training?
|
The IST training is an intensive and concentrated course of study that
will require your dedication for the entire length of the program. You will be expected to regularly attend class, read multiple
training manuals, demonstrate proficiency with hands-on activities, score
well on quizzes, develop/update your
resume, and enhance your interviewing skills. This training is designed
to be a self-directed learning process where
you work on your own or with a partner, receiving guidance, when necessary,
from the instructor(s).
After you complete the IST training, you may be interviewed regarding your
experience in the
program and your success in finding employment. |
